Ork Map Prints

I love these city neighborhood posters by Ork Inc.  I'd love to hang in a hallway... sort of a gallery of the places we have lived and traveled:

Check out their newest "Brain" poster, too:

All the posters come in several color choices.  You can purchase all the posters above - and more! - at the Ork Posters website here.

Rae Dunn

Rae Dunn is a California native who now resides in San Francisco (a local)!  After getting her degree in Industrial Design, working in graphics and fashion design, she finally turned to clay as a potter and artist.

One glance through her thriving Etsy business makes me crave more pottery in my life.

Rae's work has an unfinished, earthy aesthetic, but her designs are simple enough to look sophisticated in even the most elegant home.  In her website bio, Rae says, "I don't strive for perfection in line and form in my work, because for me the balance I'm trying to achieve can't be represented that way. The incompleteness and imperfection of my work is part of the story."

For more info on Rae Dunn, you can visit her website here.

Art of the Day: Deanna Stoffo

It's been awhile, but I couldn't help but post this portrait of Sofia Coppola by illustrator Deanna Stoffo:

Don't you love her style?  You can see more of Deanna's work on her website, and also on her blog, Mischief + Madness

Art of the Day 8.10.10

In honor of the Poketo launch at Target, I wanted to share another print available from the original Poketo:

"Snowy Owls" by Susie Gharemani

Isn't it lovely? Part of Poketo's genius is that they make art accessible by carrying it at afforable prices? You can buy the Snowy Owls print for only $40 here!

The Sketchbook Project

Have you heard of The Sketchbook Project?  SO cool.  Essentially it's a travelling exhibition of sketchbooks that anyone can participate in.  You send in a few bucks (25 to be exact), they send you a sketchbook and a theme, and you doodle, paint, alter, and get your art on.  Then you send it back and you become a featured artist in their exhibit!  For a few more bucks (20), they'll even scan your sketchbook, and put it in the online show. A dream come true for anyone who's ever want to have an art show.

This is the second year of The Sketchbook Project, so it's new and improved with a cataloging system!  Your sketchbook gets it's own code so friends and family (and you) can easily find it online and at the show. Cool, eh?

I'm definitely going to sign up, but I'm trying to decide whether to do it solo, or as a family project.  I think I'm leaning towards family project. With a family that spends our free time building steampunk lego ships and drawing robots, this could be interesting... :)

For the Love of Paper - Part 3

I know I'm bombarding you with paper artists right now; it's an obsession. But, really, with such beautiful works of art... who's complaining?
Eloise Corr Danch's Paper Flowers were recently featured in W Magazine (first pic) and at Macy's Flower Show.  I especially love the window display in the second pic - so gorgeous and creative!

Scissors and Paper Rock has a great post on artist Ivano Vitali, who CROCHETS paper. Totally different from anything I have ever seen:

And Upon a Fold has a beautiful post on an exhibition from French Artist Daniel Mar.

Daniel's work incorporates elements both elements of whimsy, but also some works a bit on the macabre side (see the final pic above). I especially love how he uses the pieces of paper he has cut out back into the work, making it especially three-dimensional and layered.

Art of the Day

Because art makes people happy.

Blue Dancer by Misti Pavlov

PS: I chose this painting because I saw it in person last year in Carmel. It was breathtaking - I can't even describe the texture of it up close.  The picture does not do it justice.

For the Love of Paper - Part 2

My previous post on artist Yulia Bordskaya got me thinking about all the other great paper artists I have come across as of late. I thought I'd share some more inspiring paper art:

Rob Ryan (who I posted about as a Midweek Inspiration
here):

Rob Ryan's blog here, Shop here.
Next up, my friend Cindy Ferguson (who I met during my lovely years in Seattle):

Shop Cindy here.
And last but not least, Su Blackwell, who does uh-mazing book cut sculptures (shout out to Cindy for introducing me to her work):

Sorry, no shop for Su that I know of!
I just love the feeling you get when you discover something beautiful and new - a new song, a new artist... Do you have any favorite artists to share?

For the Love of Paper

Grain Edit just posted this amazing poster for the Stern Grove Festival (SF) by artist Yulia Bordskaya. (Update: See even better close ups of the poster here). Yulia is a graphic artist, illustrator, and fine artist who is best known for her gorgeous paper art pieces. Technically known as "quilling", she used long strips of paper glued down to make her art (Although by her own admission, she never knew it was called quilling when she first started). The results are breathtaking - really, I almost hyperventilated when I saw her website - check out more of Yulia's gorgeous work below:
